Simply Succulents with Potted Succulents Background

Welcome back, Stamping friends! I have a fun card for you today using the Simply Succulents Bundle from the January-June Mini Catalog. Here’s the card.

First, I spritzed the background using Stampin’ Spritzers, water, and ink refills in Granny Apple Green, Gorgeous Grape, and Bermuda Bay. Apparently, there are my go to background colors, because I use them a lot! Here’s a fun video with Amelia showing how we did the background.

Let me say that creating with a six year-old is a lot of fun. Filming a video with a six year-old is even more fun. You do not know what they’re going to say or do. Fortunately, Miss Amelia is easy to get along with! (And don’t you love how she decorated my “For Craft Use Only” cookie sheet? Oh, goodness. That girl!)

I forgot to mention in the video that when you tape the die to the paper, you need to be sure you are not covering any of the die-cut areas with the tape. And use Painter’s Tape or washi tape or another low-tack tape. Fortunately, Miss Amelia remembered to mention wearing goggles! (That was a surprise, but she’s right. If you accidentally have the spritzer turned the wrong way, you could spritz yourself in the face and it could hurt if you get it in the eye.)

If you didn’t watch the video (and I’ll forgive you if you didn’t watch a video with a six year-old. Not everyone is into cute, adorable kids), we taped the large Potted Succulent Die to a piece of Watercolor Paper. We filled three spritzers about halfway with water, then added 6-8 drops of Granny Apple Green in one, Bermuda Bay in the second, and Gorgeous Grape in the third. Spritz, starting with the lightest color first, then continue with the other two until all the area under the die is covered. Blot lightly with a paper towel and let dry.

I stamped the succulents images in Tuxedo Black Memento Ink on Basic White Cardstock, then colored with Stampin’ Blends. For the smaller two, I used Highland Heather and Rich Razzleberry. For the larger one, I used Rococo Rose and Granny Apple Green. I die-cut them and the other two elements using the Potted Succulents Dies.

To finish the card, I die-cut another background die from the Pearlescent Specialized Paper from the January-June Mini Catalog, then adhered it to the background piece. You can use Adhesive Sheets or the amazing hack from Dawn Griffith that Amelia demonstrated in the video to adhere the die-cut to the background.

And just another warning – If you’re adding the die-cut to the background, be sure to add adhesive to the correct side of the die-cut. We added the adhesive sheet to the back of the die-cut – which would have been perfect if we were layering it to the background. But I thought dipping it in the Gilded Leafing would be fun. It was – and this was Amelia’s first introduction to the Gilded Leafing. Since I was going to use it as it was, the adhesive was on the back. That means the gilded leafing is on the back side of the die, so it won’t work as an overlay. But Amelia loved the way it looked on Merry Merlot Cardstock, so that will be our next project!

One more thing about Gilded Leafing – Mine is in a box, so there’s lots of room to work with it. If you’re crafting with a six year-old, be sure they know not to blow into the box. And if anyone has seasonal allergies, please be sure they know to sneeze into their elbow. not just into the air – or the box.

The final part of this card is the sentiment. I wanted extraordinary to stand out, so I inked the sentiment in Granny Apple Green, then “thumped” a Gorgeous Grape Stampin’ Write Marker over it to make extraordinary stand out a bit. It’s subtle, but it’s there.

I die-cut the sentiment with the appropriate die, then added a few Pastel Pearls to the card.

I am loving Spring Break with Amelia! After we finished the video and decided it would be ok to launch, we headed out to my mom’s house. She has a lovely rock break at the edge of her yard that is perfect for a fairy garden. We cleaned it up today, trimming some of the trees and carrying off dead twigs and branches. It was a lot of work, and we were both exhausted when we finished. We still need to make some crystals and plant some flowers after we’re sure there won’t be another frost. I bought some sodas today so we can punch butterflies, dragonflies, hearts, and flowers from the cans to hang from the trees. We are going to have all the fairies in our garden this year!
