Birthday Walrus

Birthday Walrus

Happy Monday! I have to admit, I don’t usually buy a lot of “cute” stamp sets. But now that I have a granddaughter, I’ve been buying more of them. There’s a fun story behind the “We’ll Walrus Be Friends” set that ended up in my craft room.

About a year ago, a friend of mine realized she had accidentally ordered a second Rustic Retreat Stamp Set. Did anyone want to trade?

This set has a cabin, wildlife, evergreen trees…It’s perfect for people who love the woods, and it’s especially good for “guy cards.” Sure, I’ll trade. She chose the We’ll Walrus Be Friends set. I ordered it, we traded, and everyone was happy.

Fast forward to about a month ago. One of my team members wanted to use Rustic Retreat for a card. Did I have it, and could she borrow it? Sure!

After she made the card, she didn’t want to give up the set. Could she buy it from me? No, that’s against Stampin’ Up!® policy, but we could trade. I really liked the set, but I only used it once or twice, so trading for something I would use more often seemed like a good idea. Hmmm…what would I like to trade for? I chose, “We’ll Walrus Be Friends.” Funny, don’t you think? Now, if Patty trades Rustic Retreat for the walrus, it will really be hilarious.

I decided to use the walrus for my nephew’s birthday. I just realized he’s a year older than I thought. He may have been ready for this birthday, but I wasn’t, because it means I’m really old. (Of course, now that we’ve been plagued with the Coronavirus, the CDC is plastering warnings for the “elderly” everywhere. I didn’t realize until I read the “elderly qualifications” that I am one of the elderly citizens they’re sending warnings to. Good grief. When did that happen?)

We'll Walrus Be Friends, Stampin' Up!, Birch, My Meadow
I had a blast making this background. I used the My Meadow Stamp Set in Pacific Point Classic Ink as well as the Birch background stamp in Night of Navy to create water on the Balmy Blue Cardstock. I used an Aqua Painter to blend the water a bit, then embossed with the retired Seaside Embossing Folder. The new High Seas 3D Embossing Folder would have been perfect, but I don’t have it yet. Maybe someone will want to trade. 🙂

I stamped the walrus in Tuxedo Black Memento Ink, then colored with Smoky Slate and Night of Navy Stampin’ Blends. The sentiment is stamped in Night of Navy Classic Ink, and both ovals are die-cut with the Layering Ovals Dies.

Here’s the inside of the card.

I love the look on this guy’s face, don’t you? It’s exactly how I looked when I first heard that I was “elderly!” (I still think it’s all in the mind. I refuse to be elderly until I’m at least 85.)

Love that walrus like your grandaughter. I’m a sucker for fairies and animals. If you are old I’m ancient. My granddaughter is picking up my groceries and light bulbs for me. She’s afraid to let me go out. When I can I want to order that morninng glory stamp called Morning STar.

You’re not even close to ancient! Glad you’re doing well. I’ll be very glad when this is all over and life gets “normal” again! And I’m glad you’re staying home! Stay healthy!
