Snow Front Snow Day

Do you remember snow days when you were a kid? It was so fun to have a day off to play in the snow. I remember a time when I was in elementary school when we had an incredible storm. Most of the roads were drifted closed so we didn’t have school for about two weeks. It was so much fun to play in the snow with my brothers!

I decided to make a snow day card for today, using the Snow Front Stamp Set.

This card was a lot of fun. First I stamped the evergreens from the Winter Woods Stamp Set on Whisper White Cardstock in Shaded Spruce Classic Ink. Then I added a few more evergreens from the Snow Front Stamp Set. I added mountains and the snowman from the Snow Front Stamp Set in Smoky Slate Classic Ink and the snow drifts in Seaside Spray Classic Ink. I also added a little Seaside Spray ink to the mountains and sky.

To make it look like a really snowy day, I decided to use the “dryer sheet technique” to the card. It’s a fairly old technique, but I haven’t done it in years. Simply use a glue stick to add adhesive to the entire stamped layer, then place a used dryer sheet over the cardstock. (Be sure the stamped images are completely dry. You can use a Heat Tool to ensure this as well as to heat set the ink.) Trim the cardstock so there’s about a 1/4″ – 1/2″ overlap, then “mitre” the corners (i.e. cut them on a diagonal), fold the edges back and adhere to the back of the stamped layer. Sprinkle Dazzling Diamonds Stampin’ Glitter over the dryer sheet, then tap off any excess. Finally, adhere the stamped layer to a Real Red card base.

I had stamped the sentiment on the Whisper White layer, but I didn’t let the stamped elements dry long enough (see the note above about heat setting), so using the glue stick caused the ink to smear a bit. It was actually a good thing, because the stamped and die-cut sentiment looks much better on the outside of the card. (True confession – this isn’t a die-cut. I forgot to order the dies, so I had to fussy cut the sentiment. That has been rectified, though. amd the dies will be here soon! But this is another cautionary tale to order the bundles instead of ordering the elements separately. You’ll save 10% so you can order more if you save money!)

I hope this has brought back some fun snow day memories for you. I’m not sure how Amelia will handle snow days now that she’s in school. She loves going to school every day and playing with her friends. Although she’s in a Kindergarten class with only seven other students, the “kinders” do a lot with the lower elementary students each week, like Friday field trips, swimming lessons on Mondays, lunch, recess, and more. She loves her school and her friends, so if she has a snow day on a day her parents are both working, I’m going to have to step up my game.
