Butterflies in Black & White
I hope you had a lovely holiday! I’m finally back in the groove and am looking forward to getting back to work. But I’ve enjoyed the holidays – except that I’m totally confused about what day it is.
Several weeks ago I posted this card using the Beauty Abounds Bundle (Beauty Abounds Stamp Set and Butterfly Beauty Thinlits Dies) from the 2019 Stampin’ Up!® Occasions Catalog (which you can order from beginning tomorrow, January 3, 2019!).
This was the first idea for the Black & White Challenge Swap I participated in in December. It was fun, and I love the card, but it was a little more work than I wanted to do for a swap. You can read more about the card here.
This is the card I decided on. They went in the mail last week, so if my swapping friends haven’t gotten them yet, they will soon!
Here are the measurements: Whisper White – 2-3/4″ x 4-1/4″; Basic Black – 4″ x 5-1/4″, Whisper White card base – 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″, scored and folded in half for a 4-1/4″ x 5-1/2″ card. The DSP is 1″ x 4-1/4″. You’ll also need scraps of Whisper White and Basic Black to die-cut the butterflies.
After cutting the paper, the first step is to stamp and die-cut the butterfly on Whisper White Cardstock using Tuxedo Black Memento Ink. Since I was making 10, I die-cut all the butterflies first, then placed the stencil I had created from die-cutting into my Stamparatus. I positioned the butterfly stamp into the stencil, then closed the plate. These are cling stamps, so they stay exactly where you place them on your Acrylic Block or Stamparatus. Next, place the die-cut into the stencil, ink the stamp, then close the plate. Easy!
Set the butterfly aside for a few minutes and die-cut the small ones from Basic Black Cardstock. I chose to use two, because I thought that was a good balance with the Whisper White stamped one.
The splatter behind the butterflies is from the Artisan Textures Stamp Set in the 2018-19 Stampin’ Up!® Annual Catalog. I used my Stamparatus again, so I inked the stamp in Tuxedo Black Memento Ink, then stamped onto my Stamparatus Grid Paper (without cardstock) one time, then stamped on the 2-3/4″ x 4-1/4″ Whisper White Cardstock. This way I had a lighter gray background without breaking any “Use only Black & White” rules. If you’re using Acrylic or Wood Blocks, simply stamp off on scrap paper one time.
While the cardstock was in the Stamparatus, I stamped hello, also from the Beauty Abounds Stamp Set in Tuxedo Black Memento Ink. All that was left was to put it all together.
I used Mini Glue Dots for the Basic Black butterflies, and a Stampin’ Dimensional on the stamped one. And don’t you love that Botanical Butterfly Designer Series Paper? It’s free during Sale-a-bration (which begins tomorrow, January 3, 2019!) with a $50 order. It has gorgeous colors on one side – Balmy Blue, Daffodil Delight, Grapefruit Grove, Highland Heather, and Lemon-Lime Twist – and the other side of each sheet is a Black and White Design. It also coordinates with the Butterfly Duet Punch that will be available in the 2019 Occasions Catalog beginning tomorrow.
If you purchase the Beauty Abounds Bundle, you will have spent the $50 necessary to earn this beautiful paper free – and you will have saved 10% over the individual price. Or, if you order the Thinlits separately, you can add the Artisan Textures Stamp Set (wood- or clear-mount) and earn the paper.
If you’re into fussy cutting or you don’t have a Big Shot…Well, my first advice would be to join my team of awesome demonstrators during Sale-a-bration to earn $175 worth of Stampin’ Up!® products for only $99. Or – you can include the Craft & Carry Tote plus $175 in product to your starter kit for only $129.
My second advice would be to order the Beauty Abounds Stamp Set, plus the Memento Ink Pad, Whisper White and Basic Black Cardstock, and embellishments – like the Pick a Pattern Washi Tape. (But the starter kit is much more fun!)
Remember – today is the last day to order from the 2018 Holiday Catalog, so be sure to place your order early.
Thanks for stopping by Stamping with Buffy. Have a lovely day!

A beautiful black & white card, Buffy. I like the splatter behind the butterflies. (and I can’t believe you convinced Susan to buy butterfly sets! LOL)

Thanks, Deborah! I really wanted to throw a pop of color in there, but rules are rules. (And this time, I didn’t make the rules, so I couldn’t break them!) Yeah – that surprised me too. Have you heard Susan’s butterfly story? I wouldn’t like them either. Long story short – don’t visit a butterfly garden.
