How Do You Write That?

I don’t know about you, but this is a super easy way to use calligraphy on cards. I was a music major in college, and one of my electives was Calligraphy. About Mom

I want to thank everyone who sent happy thoughts to my mom yesterday. She’s doing very well and came home from the hospital a day early. Bottom line – she needs to take her meds and avoid stress.

Before she left the hospital, we had to pick up a prescription for her meds. While she was getting a final X-ray (f0r a cough caused by previous meds) and the wheelchair to get her out of the hospital, I ran to the pharmacy to pick up her prescription.

At our hospital, every time they do anything for a patient – give them drugs, move them to another room, take their blood pressure, leave dinner – they ask for their birthday. I always thought it was to see if the patient was coherent. Today, I learned that’s maybe not the case.

When I went to get Mom’s meds, I was asked her birthdate. Fortunately I knew she was 25 years older than me, so it was easy to answer.  “Oh, it looks like that was just called in. It’s not ready yet.” No problem. Everything at the hospital is slow, so I knew she wouldn’t be ready to leave for awhile.

While I was waiting, I looked around. This hospital pharmacy has a LOT of fun gift ideas. I saw a doctor’s jacket with a pretend stethoscope and other doctor things – the hammer you use to check reflexes, the thing you use to look into eyes and ears (that I won’t even try to spell, because I was a music major, not an Allied Health major), thermometer and more! Before I could cave and give in to an impulse purchase, one of the ladies at the “pick-up” counters said, “Can I help you?”

I told her, “I don’t think it’s ready yet, but it’s for (my mom’s name).”

“Date of birth?” she asked. My response, “Month/Day/1933.” (And now, if you’re good at math, you know how old I am. If you’re not – I’m not telling! Ok Keep reading. I will eventually tell.)

“I’m sorry. What was the date?” I repeated it. “What was the year again?” Me: 1933.

Girl at the counter: Was that 1933? Seriously? Is my diction that bad? I know I don’t yell when I speak, but it’s my Mom’s birth year. I’m not whispering like I would if it were mine.

At that point I realized she hadn’t heard that it was for my mom.  I felt like saying, “I look good for 85 don’t I? You should use Ever skin care products!” But I didn’t. I just repeated the date and continued with the purchase.

So, yeah – I’m almost 60 but don’t look like 85. I guess that’s a good thing?
