Under the Sea

I’ve been wanting to play with Brusho on foil sheets for several weeks now. I’m so glad Stampin’ Up! is offering the Brusho Crystal Colour bundle – and I’m even more glad that my dear friend Jackie decided to use it on foil sheets. She’s used it a couple times on foil sheets and DSP. Here’s one she did for our Friday Stamp-Off Challenge.

Jackie and Susan always stretch my creativity, and I’ve learned so much from them. I’ll be using an idea from Susan later this week.

Back to the foil sheets and Brusho. I’ve wanted to play with this since I saw Jackie’s first post using it, and I finally got a chance today. What do you think?

The fun thing about this technique is if you don’t like it, just keep playing. You just can’t overdo it. Here are the details.

How to Create this Amazing Background

I decided to use a Copper Foil Sheet, but you can use gold or silver as well. First, sprinkle some Brusho on the sheet. (I used Gamboge, which is orange, and that’s what I’ll be calling it throughout this post.) Then spritz with water. It looked gorgeous on the Copper Foil Sheet. It looked so gorgeous, that I didn’t want to waste the excess, so I smooshed it onto a piece of Watercolor Paper so I’d have a second panel for later. Don’t do this. Now I had an orange yellow watercolored sheet, and a copper sheet with orange smeared over it. There was no texture, no flecks of color, nothing. Just blah.

A Little Sneak Peek

The Sea of Textures Stamp Set and Under the Sea Framelits (and the discounted bundle) were on the list of items we could purchase early because we attended OnStage. If you’re a demonstrator who didn’t attend OnStage and are a little jealous, let me tell you, I earned this perk.

But first, a Detour

I attended OnStage in Hartford, CT. I live in a small town in Virginia. I’m a Southerner. It was a challenge to drive to Connecticut. (It’s a challenge to spell Connecticut.) Ok, I didn’t drive. I dragged Mike along with me and he drove. But still, it was harrowing. First, Yankees are fearless and aggressive drivers. We faced death more times than I can count. Mike had printed directions to the hotel before we left (yeah, I know. Old school.), but somewhere along the way, he thought it might be a good idea to plug the destination into his car’s GPS.

His car’s GPS hates me. She will not let you enter your destination when the car is moving, because she doesn’t want to get sued when you wreck your car because you’re plugging in your destination and don’t see the crazy Yankee passing you on the shoulder at 180 mph. So you have to give voice commands. “Please state your destination in New Jersey.” Ok, my destination wasn’t in New Jersey (thank God); it was in Connecticut. I gave the destination address. She couldn’t find it. Then she suggested I say, “Change state.” Seriously? Why didn’t she say that before? (She didn’t answer when I asked that.) Through clenched teeth, I said, “Change state.” It went downhill from there. I honestly expected her to say, “Please do not be so snippy. It’s not helping your situation.” But no. She didn’t say that. Instead, the evil woman sent us through New York City. New York City. On a Friday. At 3:00 p.m. Well played, Siri. Well played.

My Connecticut friends later told me we didn’t have to do that, and my dear friend Christy gave us directions home that didn’t even take us close to NYC. She’s my forever hero. So after all that, I think being able to order a few stamp sets early is totally earned!

Back to the Card

You’re still with me? You deserve a medal! I wasn’t going to get the Sea of Textures bundle, but then I looked at the stamp set. When they say, “textures,” they mean it. I’m a grungy texture girl, and there are some amazing textures here. And then I looked closer at the Under the Sea Framelits (they may be Thinlits. Actually, they really are both.). Another net. Sand Dollars. I’m hooked.

Stamp the texture stamp and the seaweedy stamp in VersaMark ink on the Brusho Copper Panel, then emboss with Copper Stampin’ Emboss Powder. Diecut the net from Whisper White Cardstock, then sponge with Crumb Cake Classic Stampin’ Ink. Lay it upside down on a Silicone Craft Sheet, then add a bit of SNAIL Adhesive to the back, and adhere to the bottom right corner of the copper foil. Use the Celebrate You Thinlits Dies from Sale-a-bration (you didn’t get them? No worries! They’ll be in the 2018-19 Stampin’ Up! Annual Catalog, so you can buy them in June) to die-cut Celebrate from Coastal Cabana Cardstock (Yes! It’s back in June! Happy Dance! I’ve been wanting this color back since it retired as an In Color several years ago), and You from Tranquil Tide, then adhere over the net with Mini Stampin’ Dimensionals. Add the copper foil to a Tranquil Tide card base. Done! You’ll probably want to add a piece of Very Vanilla Cardstock inside the card, because unless you stamp a sentiment in Whisper White Craft Ink and use a white gel pen to write your message, it’s going to be hard to read. And while you’re at it, stamp the octopus or seaweed/coral on the inside for some added interest.
