Bees & Dragonflies
I have always enjoyed coloring. I remember the year my older brother bought me a box of 24 crayons. We were kids and our Christmas budget was quite limited. I was thrilled. I love the sharp points on each crayon and the unspoiled paper wrapping, the clean box that stays closed for the first few times you use it, and the smell of new wax. I almost hate to use them, because the points dull, the paper gets torn away to expose more wax, and the box gets messed and worn. And they lose that fresh crayon smell.
This year, Jon bought Amelia a box of 96 crayons. 96! Be still my old heart. I remember when 64 was the most you could get. Amelia’s mega box has the original colors (Burnt Sienna, Burnt Orange, and Raw Sienna were always my faves. What can I say? It seems I’ve always been drawn to earth tones.), plus fun ones like Jazzberry Jam and Mango Tango. It also includes metallics and gels. It’s been a test of my integrity and a testament to my love for my granddaughter that I haven’t hidden them from her, squirreling them away in my craft room for my personal use late at night, away from the prying eyes of my family.
Sadly, Amelia discovered the sharpener on the back of the box. While this feature is lovely when your crayons dull and you need a nice, sharp point, it’s not good in the hands of a curious two year-old. She likes to sharpen all her crayons – even the sharp ones. It took a few broken crayons before I could convince her to pull them straight out of the sharpener so the tips don’t break – like my heart when I saw the first destroyed tip.
I do have my own stash of art supplies, though. Stampin’ Up! has launched new Watercolor Pencils in the new 2017 Occasions Catalog. You’ll be able to order them beginning Wednesday, January 4! There are 12 colors, but you can blend them to create almost any color you want. They work very well with Blender Pens or Aqua Painters, and pair beautifully with any of the brushstroke stamps. And with every $50 order from January 4 – March 31, 2017, you can select a free Sale-a-bration item as well!
I paired the Watercolor Pencils and Dragonfly Dreams Bundle with the free Sale-a-bration Inside the Lines Designer Series Paper for this card.
Inside the Lines DSP is like the wonderful adult coloring books that are so popular. (When I mentioned Adult Coloring Book to Mike, he took it in totally the wrong direction. I had to clarify that these were coloring books for grown-ups, not salacious etchings for us to color.)
I used the Watercolor Pencils to color the flowers and dragonfly. Then I heat embossed the bees from Dragonfly Dreams on Vellum Cardstock. I used retired black embossing powder, but you can easily ink a stamp in Versamark then in Basic Black Archival Ink and emboss with clear powder to achieve similar results.
There’s a die-cut that coordinates with the bee, but I cut them by hand. The die-cut is detailed and cuts more of the bee than I wanted. I colored the back of the bee’s body with a Delightful Dijon Stampin’ Write Marker, then covered the wings of the bees and the dragonfly (which is part of the paper) with Fine-Tip Glue and Dazzling Diamonds Glitter. It gives them a bit of dimension and shimmer.
I added the bees and the sentiment (from All Things Thanks, also in the new Occasions) with Stampin’ Dimensionals after I splattered a little more glue and glitter over the card. There’s a little Silver Metallic Thread behind the sentiment as well.
So get that Occasions Wishlist started! Remember – for every $50 you spend during Sale-a-bration (SAB), you can select a free SAB item. If your wishlist is really big, consider joining my team as a Stampin’ Up! Demonstrator. You can select $125 in product in your $99 starter kit. And if you join during SAB, you can select two more stamp sets FREE!
Remember – while you have to wait until January 4 to order from the new Occasions Catalog, you still have a couple days left to order products from the Stampin’ Up! Holiday Catalog. Products that are “bundled” in the catalog will only be available at the bundle price through January 3. And many of the products are retiring and won’t be available after the 3rd, so order now!
Thanks for stopping by Stamping with Buffy. Have a wonderful day!
