Wow! This has been a crazy, horrible, no good, very bad week. It started out ok; we got home safely from Florida Monday evening. It was cold and quite a shock to this old body that had gotten used to above 60 degree temps, but I’ve adjusted. Finally.
When we got home, our 11(+-) year old Rottweiler wasn’t doing well. He hadn’t been eating, and didn’t want to get up. The not getting up part we understood. Hip issues made that difficult, and he’s always loved to sleep. But not eating? That’s not like our Hoss. He LOVES food!
Jon had been staying with him (thanks for giving him up for a week, Rachel!!), and he and Mike slept in the family room with Hoss Monday night. None of us expected him to make it through the night, but Tuesday morning, he was up and moving around. He still wouldn’t eat, though.
Wednesday, he went outside, then came in and lay down on the floor in the family room. Mike & I were sitting there, drinking coffee and playing with Amelia. Mike got up to get a second cup, and – boom – Hoss was gone. He slipped out of this life and over the rainbow bridge just like he lived – quietly and peacefully.
If you ever met Hoss, you know how he got that name. (He came with it, by the way, and it fit so well, we kept it.) He was huge. He could rest his head on the dining room table (not that he did). His top weight was about 180, but we tried to keep him around 130-140.

He was the best dog we’ve ever had. He was gentle and friendly, but if anyone seemed threatening, he would stand in front of his family to protect them. I miss him so much, and, even though he was very quiet (usually! Jon and especially Wes could get him going sometimes!), the house is so very silent now that he’s gone. It’s going to take some time, but eventually, the happy memories will overtake the sadness.
Of course, when I’m sad and need therapy, I head to the stamp room. I had a little time tonight, so I grabbed my new chalkboard paper and chalk ink and made this.
I need to work on getting the ink more evenly on the stamp, but I like this. It’s very simple. I wasn’t feeling that creative, but I needed to make something, so I CASEd the card on page 13 of the Sale-a-bration brochure. I used several Sale-a-bration products – the Simply Wonderful stamp set (139125 – wood; 139128 – clear) and the Best Year Ever designer series paper (138633). The designer clip is retired, but you could use any of the Essentials Hardware Clips (129964; $5.95) or Basics Hodgepodge Clips (133765; $6.95) and enjoy the same (or even better!) results. I tied a bow from Coastal Cabana Thick Baker’s Twine (135638; $3.50) to the clip, and the ink is the new chalk ink from the Occasions catalog. I used Yellow Citrus (138093; $5.95) and Rose Coral (138091; $5.95) with the Chalkboard Paper (137786; $7.95). I colored over the leaves and stems with a Lost Lagoon Stampin’ Write Marker, but I don’t think it shows up very well.
I’ll keep playing. I love the chalkboard look. And, just an FYI, that white mark on the card isn’t on the card. Maybe it’s a speck of dust or something, but I don’t see it on the card. Odd, right?

Buffy, I’m so sorry about Hoss. It is so hard to adjust after our animal family members are gone. You find yourself realizing that subconsciously you’ve been listening for them moving around the house. Hugs to you and your family.

Buffy so very sad to hear of your sad week, our Pets are a huge part of our lives. Have been thru this and non doggy owners don’t understand what a huge part they play in your lives…..you are all in my thoughts and thanks so much for all your brilliant work you are so kind to share…I’m a senior citz here in Oz a late comer to this stamping world and love reading your emails and checking out your blog…..thanks you for all you do and love to your family, it will be a tough time ahead but take solace in knowing Hoss had a great life with a wonderful family.

I am so so sorry. I too lost a dog during leadership. I ended up not going he was 12. I slept with him in family room on Monday and at 4 am Tuesday morning he made a noise I jumped up and he was dying I ran and got my husband and we sat with him while he passed. He to was my best friend we did s lot of Stamping together. He greeted all my ladies at the door and barked until they would go down stairs. I am lost and just can not seem to get inspired to stamp. I feel your pain and again I say I am so sorry

I am sooo sorry for your loss. (((((HUGS))))) We lost our beagle Molly three years ago. (it will be exactly three years tomorrow) She was such a good girl, got her from the pound in 2000 and they thought she was 3 or 4 and we had her until 2012 so she was 15 or 16. She went blind and we had to have her eyes removed but she knew her way around the house already. We had gotten another beagle in 2007 and Penelope would lead her up the two flights of stairs every night for bed. I still miss her but now she and your Hoss can run and play!!

Awwww – that’s so sweet. And, yes, I’m sure Hoss is making lots of friends. He loved other dogs, and always wanted to greet them. He was so gentle, especially with little dogs. I think Molly will probably be one of his best buds!

Buffy, my deepest sympathy to you this week. Wow.. I know the comfort of our four legged ones too well. I think they are here to make us better people, but our time is so short. I know in time the hurt will ease.. I hurt everyday for mine, but, they are a part of us that never goes away, and for him to have waited for your return was the best. Awwwww- we grieve with you, Buffy. He was a grand old doggy-gentleman! The last time I saw him, I said, “Hi, Hoss! Grammy came to see you.” He looked right into my eyes with the sweetest, most loving look. That stays in my memory. He knew how to make you feel that he was glad to see you. My heart aches for you and Mike.

I am so far behind in reading your posts that I missed this sad event. Just know that you are in my thoughts. I will miss the stories you told of your two wonderful aging dogs. I always felt I sort of knew them and loved them through you.
Though this was almost a month ago, I know you are still sad, and happy to have known them both.

Thanks, Darrah! They really were amazing dogs, and I miss them both. But, life goes on. Now we have adopted Wes & Steph’s cat, Ashlynn. With a baby and full-time jobs, they just didn’t have time to take care of a pet, so they “gave” her to us. She’s settling in very well, and we’re adjusting to being cat people.
